Luke Chueh, a central Californian transplant, who made a name for himself through his graphic design, paintings and illustrations. His work is often considered a part of the Lowbrow Art and Pop Surrealism movement, a term he often distances himself from. Both movements encompass a contemporary range of artists who draw their inspiration from outside the traditional fine arts community. Such artists typically draw reference from various do-it-yourself cultures such as punk rock, tattooing and comics.

Chueh’s work displays a great deal of emotion and vulnerability through the use of situational irony and animalistic characters, most often of which are bears and rabbits. This is perhaps what has drawn me most to his body of work. After all, things aren’t always as obvious as they seem on the surface. As stated in his personal bio on his facebook profile, “Chueh stylistically balances cute with brute, walking the fine line between comedy and tragedy.”
